Romantic Galway Getaway
2 nights | Couples | Romance, seafood and the city that invented the Claddagh ring
Galway has been capturing hearts for centuries. This is the city that gave the world the Claddagh ring — the two-handed symbol of love, loyalty and friendship — and walking through the cobblestoned Latin Quarter on a quiet evening, or watching the light over Galway Bay from Nimmos Pier, it’s easy to understand why the city has that reputation.
The Romantic Galway Getaway is designed for couples who want to experience the very best of the city — the finest restaurants, the most atmospheric bars, the most beautiful walks — in a stay that feels genuinely special rather than merely efficient.
What’s Included
- 2 nights accommodation at the Eyre Square Hotel — a comfortable, well-located base in the heart of the city
- Breakfast available each morning
- Dinner for two at a recommended Galway restaurant — our team will suggest the most suitable option based on your preferences and the occasion (from a casual Quay Street evening to a special occasion dinner at a Michelin-recognised restaurant)
- A personalised itinerary from our team covering the most romantic walks, viewpoints and experiences in the city — including the Long Walk at dusk, the Claddagh, and our favourite spots for a quiet evening drink
- Late checkout on departure morning (subject to availability)
Suggested Romantic Itinerary
Evening One: Arrive at the hotel, freshen up, and head to the Merchant Bar & Restaurant for a relaxed dinner with a glass of something good. Afterwards, take an evening walk along Quay Street and into the Latin Quarter — at night, with the pubs lit up and the sound of music drifting out onto the cobblestones, it is one of the most atmospheric streets in Ireland.
Day Two: Morning coffee on Shop Street, followed by a walk through the city to the Spanish Arch and along The Long Walk to the Claddagh. Browse a Claddagh ring shop (they’re here if you want one, and they’re beautiful). Walk back along the river towards Galway Cathedral. In the evening, dinner at your recommended restaurant — our personal suggestion is Ard Bia at Nimmos, directly on the harbour wall beside the Spanish Arch.
Evening Two: After dinner, find a quiet corner in Tigh Neachtain on Cross Street — one of the oldest and most atmospheric pubs in the city, with a real fire in winter and outdoor seats facing the Latin Quarter in summer.
For a special occasion — anniversary, proposal, Valentine’s Day — let us know when you book and we’ll make sure the details are right.

Galway occupies one of the most extraordinary geographic positions of any city in Europe. Within an hour’s drive of the hotel, you can be standing at the edge of the Cliffs of Moher looking out at the Atlantic, walking through the ancient landscape of the Burren, exploring the wild beauty of Connemara National Park, or crossing to the Aran Islands where the Irish language, ancient stone forts, and an unhurried way of life have survived into the 21st century.
The Wild Atlantic Way Touring Base package is designed for guests who want to use Galway city as a comfortable, well-located base for exploring the west of Ireland — returning each evening to a reliable, well-positioned hotel in the city centre, with good food and a welcoming bar waiting for them.

The Three Classic Day Trips
Day Trip 1: Connemara
Head west from Galway through Moycullen and Oughterard to reach Connemara National Park — a wild, sparsely populated landscape of mountains, bogs, rivers and loughs that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Ireland. Stop at Kylemore Abbey, drive the spectacular Sky Road near Clifden, and return via Roundstone for one of the finest views of the Twelve Bens mountain range. The drive is roughly 150km return; allow a full day.
Day Trip 2: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren
Drive south from Galway through the extraordinary limestone landscape of the Burren — a vast karst plateau unique in Europe, dotted with megalithic tombs, wild orchids and ancient ringforts — and continue to the Cliffs of Moher, where 214-metre sea cliffs drop sheer into the Atlantic. The views, on a clear day, extend to the Aran Islands, Loop Head and the mountains of Connemara. The drive is approximately 90km each way; allow a full day including time at the cliffs.
Day Trip 3: Aran Islands
Take the ferry from Rossaveal (45 minutes west of Galway by coach connection) to Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands. Hire a bicycle or take a pony trap up to Dún Aonghasa — a prehistoric stone fort perched on 90-metre cliffs above the Atlantic that has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. The islands are Irish-speaking, largely car-free, and offer one of the most vivid experiences of the ancient west of Ireland available to any visitor. Allow a full day for the island, plus travel time.
A Word on Self-Drive vs. Guided Tours
All three day trips can be done independently by car, which gives you maximum flexibility in terms of pace and detours. However, for visitors without a car — or those who’d prefer to sit back and let someone else navigate the Connemara roads — excellent guided day tours depart from Galway city centre daily. Our team can recommend the best operators. If you’re arriving by train, a car hire from Galway city is straightforward and gives you full flexibility for your touring days.
